Moaning, Battlestar Galactica and Christmas cards (again)

Urgh. I still feel like utter shit and I'm beginning to suspect that I'm allergic to the cats as well as having a cold. Having a cat allergy could be quite irritating. I've hardly touched the sweet, sweet internet since I came back last Monday so I've probably missed quite a bit on my flist. I've been mostly sleeping.

Actually, I have been downloading the first few Battlestar Galactica episodes. Question for you Battlestar Galactica watching folks, do you need to have seen the film/minseries thingy for the TV show to make sense? Should I try and watch that first?

Oh, and while I'm at it, if you still want a Christmas card and you haven't commented here, then go and comment as I've actually started writing a few out. I want to be all Yay! Christmas! but I'm more like Yay. Bed. at the moment.

Oh screw you Semagic. Why won't you post?!

The mini-series helps. A lot. There are elements in the mini that aren't present in the original series, and that aren't really explained too thoroughly in the first episodes. Particularly the presence of Number Six.

You can probably manage wouthout seeing it, but I'd recommend borrowing a copy from someone. Don't you live quite close to me? I have the mini on DVD.

I thought that it might be pretty integral viewing and I hate watching stuff out of order.

I live in Nottingham which isn't really too close to Barnsley - at least not in the sense of, I'll just pop round and borrow this shiny, shiny DVD.

The things you need to know before watching 33 (which I did without seeing the Miniseries):
1. The Cylons can look human, and there are duplicates of each one. So the Sharon/Boomer you see on Caprica and the Sharon/Boomer you see on Galactica are the same Cylon model.
2. Dr. Baltar was somehow complicit with the Cylon attack. Not sure how. He claims to be close to making the first Cylon Detector to tell humans apart from human-Cylons.
3. The fact that Cylons can look human is known only to Commander Adama, President Roslin and their top staff. Also, of course, Dr. Baltar.
4. Six is the name of Dr. Baltar's Cylon. She could be a) a symptom of a schizophrenic mind or b) a chip placed in his brain by a real life version of Six. He can retreat to a fantasy with the Six in his mind where they seem to have lots of sex and conversations about God.
5. It is not easy to jump at lightspeed in this Universe. It's a complicated thing, and having all the fleet do so at once in the same direction is a tough thing. Also, light speed cannot be maintained. It's a jump. Nothing more.
6. The Cylons destroyed all 12 Earth colonies at once, and introduced a virus into the fleets that disabled every ship. Galactica survived because the technology on board was old and incompatible with the virus. It was on its way to be decommissioned when the attack took place.
7. Since the Cylons can infiltrate technology, telephones are used to communicate throughout the fleet.
8. The fleet is nominally on its way to search for the Thirteenth Colony, which is the legendary and almost-forgotten Earth. The leadership don't really believe it exists, but they feel it gives the fleet a goal, something to focus on. This never comes up in the show, though.

So that's everything I've gleaned and also lots that my friend told me just before we watched 33. Hope it helps. Another BSG fan, yay!

Rats, I knew I forgot something.

9. Helo, the guy left on Caprica, had to stay behind to give his place on a rescue ship to Dr. Baltar. Baltar has convinced everyone that he's essential because of his Cylon Detector. The Boomer that comes back to rescue Helo is a Cylon. Whether or not she knows she's a Cylon, we don't find out until later. The Boomer on Galactica does not know she's a Cylon.
10. Which leads me to point out that some human Cylons believe themselves to be human.

Oooh! Fab stuff! It all sounds very complicated! I think I'll try and get to see the mini series first but if not I'll use your handy guide! I just need to download the 4th and 5th episode now as I've taped the latest off the telly when they were on.

Baltar wasn't complicit on purpose: Number Six 'helped' him with his work on the defense network, and in return he gave her access to classified material. She told him that she needed it so she'd have an advantage when bidding for a defense contract.

Ah, cool, my friend didn't tell me that. Thank you. Poor old Baltar. I love the guy, especially when he gets frantic and high-pitched. *g*

"No more Mr. Nice Gaius" - I need that icon. Heh heh.
