It's so true...

In other news:  Gay outrage over penguin sex test.

"Gay rights activists have protested at a north German zoo's plans to test the sexual orientation of six male penguins which have displayed homosexual traits.

Bremerhaven's Zoo am Meer said it would introduce four extra female penguins from Sweden to the group to see if the males really were gay.

But zoo director Heike Kueck said "gay groups worldwide have been cursing us since that announcement".

The zoo says it just wants to encourage the rare Humboldt penguins to breed.

The males have been observed trying to mate with each other and trying to hatch offspring out of stones.

"We don't know whether the three male pairs are really homosexual or whether they have just bonded because of a shortage of females," said Mrs Kueck, quoted by Germany's Der Spiegel news magazine.

Gay groups insisted that penguins had a right to form couples without human interference, she said.

"Nobody here wants to forcibly separate homosexual couples," she said.

Only one baby Humboldt penguin has been born at the zoo, which has six males and four females, Der Spiegel reports."

Um. They're threatened with extinction. Though the idea of the two males trying to hatch a stone is rather cute surely it's better to see if they actually will breed?

Firstly, I have to say the gay rights activists are being ridiculous over this one. Let them see if the penguins choose to be gay, or if they'll choose to breed. I hate this kind of hobby-horsing. It is so misplaced. The penguins are trying to hatch stones, for crying out loud.

Secondly, oh my god, Sirius and Remus are actually bloody snogging there! I am so glad that guy directed that movie!

[identity profile] odycee.livejournal.com 2005-02-14 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly! They can't force them to breed with the females - they're just giving them the option! And frankly, where's the harm in that if the species is endangered?

I too am very glad. Who needs manips when you've got it right there on the screen? ;)

[identity profile] niennah.livejournal.com 2005-02-14 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Is that manipped? Am I stupid? They were clearly all over each other in that scene, though.

[identity profile] odycee.livejournal.com 2005-02-14 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's manipped at all. At least I'm pretty sure it's not. It was a very um, intimate hug and Remus definitely had his hand on Sirius's arse at one point. I was just referring to the manips that people have done - such as the numerous ones in my icons.

[identity profile] niennah.livejournal.com 2005-02-14 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
lol! I thought you were being heavily sarcastic saying hello, it's manipped, you mook.

It is certainly a rather intimate greeting. And so heartbreaking after so long! <3<3<3

I must watch it again to see the hand on the arse, though.

[identity profile] odycee.livejournal.com 2005-02-14 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
No! lol!

It is certainly a rather intimate greeting. And so heartbreaking after so long!

I know. *sniff* And that's why I cannot stay away from that pairing.

Here's a cap that's definitely not manipped and is obviously from moments before or after that one:

Did you ever think any more about that manips community then?

[identity profile] niennah.livejournal.com 2005-02-14 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
*sniffle* You only do the one arm up, one arm down hug when you *really* mean it. And their smiles! <3 I totally get this pairing. I predict that I'll fall for it when it's gone out of fashion, lol! Just like Jack/Daniel.

I did give it more thought, but it seems like I'm rushing around doing stuff constantly these days. Also, there was v little feedback on that. I'd like to do it, though, so I have to work out how to define 'manip' and how to run the comm. I think an awards comm would be best, but that would depend on there being enough manips around to be nommed every one week or two... I'm not sure there are. How about the HP fandom? What's that like for manips? I've seen great SG ones, bot SG-1 and Atlantis, as well as Angel and Buffy ones of course. But I'd need lots of fandoms involved for it to be at all successful.

[identity profile] odycee.livejournal.com 2005-02-14 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Jack/Daniel never goes out of fashion (at least not in my book!)

I obviously read that post you made about it but I think it must have been in the period at the end of Jan where I wasn't about very much and only did flying f-list checks.

Hmmm... HP fandom. There's probably some about but really the only ones I've seen are icon sized ones. But generally I don't venture out into the wilds of HP fandom. I stay in the safe little Maurauders corner so I can't speak for the rest of it. I think it's more about the fanart really and of course there's a lot less stock footage than there is for a TV show.

I remember those Stargate ones that you linked to a while back and they were absolutely gorgeous. I seem to remember there being Highlander ones there too.

So yeah, not sure what all that rambling up there is about.

I have just found a few manip comms: [livejournal.com profile] lost_manips, [livejournal.com profile] sv_manipsnip (woah - some pretty explicit manips there!), [livejournal.com profile] photo_manip - not fandom.

[identity profile] niennah.livejournal.com 2005-02-14 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
The Smallville one looks like it's got a good system going. The best way to prove it's a manip is to show the original pics it came from. I could give a theme or something. I like it. And good definition of manip in the Lost one. I like the format of posting there, too. Muchos gracias for the linkage.

I want to include fanart, I think, to allow for fandoms that don't have vast amounts of caps, like HP, LOTR and even LOTRPS (lord save my soul).

Jack and Daniel 4 evah, yo! :)

Why don't I get one of these? Do you not love me as much as you love Em and Cee? *weeps*

Here you go my darling. And it's not even offensive!

Aww, thank you! *hugs and smooches* It's not offensive at all. It's fabulous!

Today I learned that whining gets you two Valentines. *g*

Here's one for you, and it's only slightly dirty.

You know, the gay rights movement would probably make a lot more progress if its leaders didn't get huffy over every little pro-heterosexual thing that goes on in the world. They should try to look at it this way: if these gay male penguins truly love each other and want to have commitment ceremonies, what female penguin could possibly stand in the way of their monogamy?

[identity profile] odycee.livejournal.com 2005-02-14 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't even think it's a pro-heterosexual thing. If they weren't an endangered species therefore making it advantageous for them to breed, I'm pretty sure that they'd be left well alone.

And as you say, if it's true love, no female penguin will get a look in! It's a pretty cute story anyway - them settling down to incubate a rock. I'm sure that in the other gay penguin story I heard (because there's so many of them!) they actually geve the couple an abandoned egg and they brought it up as their own chick.

[identity profile] fourleftxaviers.livejournal.com 2005-02-14 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh god that is much too cute. I have noticed there are a lot of gay penguin stories out there. I wonder why that is. You don't hear a lot about gay sheep.

I'd just say the zoologists are being pro-heterosexual in the sense that they're being realistic and up front about their desire for more penguins, and a bunch of boy penguins (however adorably attached to one another) aren't going to get them anywhere. But I don't think that their being proactive in trying to usher in some basic heterosexual mating makes them anti-gay. That's silly. Good for them for not catering to political correctness at the expense of common sense.

Seriously. If housecats were teetering on the edge of extinction and GLAAD had six male cats but didn't want to introduce them to any girl kitties, there would be rioting in the streets. I very much appreciate that the male penguins might loff each other, but extinction sucks.

Here's one! The NY couple: http://msnbc.msn.com/id/4352011/

There was a bisexual pony on the same field as Oscar a few years ago. Oscar loved her and she used to let him mount her (he's a gelding but you wouldn't think it sometimes!) but she used to mount the other mares as well. Oscar was very upset when we moved him off the field!

[identity profile] fourleftxaviers.livejournal.com 2005-02-15 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh. That's funny about Oscar.

You know, I remember that article. And the San Fransisco slideshow attached to that page. The couples all look so happy.

I love the Anti-Valentine! Now, if only they had one about being destined to die alone, being found three weeks later half-eaten by an Alsatian (a la Bridget Jones). That would be me.

Hardcore HP valentines - the Dumbledore one cracks me up so much:

I agree with you. This is about survival being threatened. ::shakes head::

And Happy Valentine's Day to you!

And also me. Only with cats.

the Dumbledore one cracks me up so much

I look at that and laugh cause it's damn funny (but then, so is disco) and then my brain goes "aaaargh!!!!" when it processes it. The mental images that it brings can only be erased by liberal amounts of bleach. And possibly wire wool.

Happy Valentine's Day to you as well!

OMG. That one is hilarious as well!

This one made me laugh like Elijah Woods being interviewed by Hans Jensen

Laughing at that interview gave me an asthma attack. This made me snort in a most unladylike fashion.

And yes, I know Valentine's Day's gone now but thanks for the lovely offensive virtual card anyway.
