odycee: (Brokeback Mountain by niannah)

Look at my spiffy Brokeback Mountain icon that [livejournal.com profile] niannah made!

So the first two days in my new job went okay. There's so much stuff for me to learn as I have no background in the area whatsoever. I must say it's been quite nice to use my brain again. All the people I've met and spoken to so far seem really friendly and helpful so that's good.

The bad thing is that I haven't gone into work today as when I woke up, I looked in the bathroom mirror and realised that the left side of my face was swelled up, rather like it does when I've taken aspirin. I had to take my inhaler and I've been itchy all over. God knows what I'm allergic to now. I went to the doctors and got some antihistamines but they don't seem to have worked as yet. I guess I'll have to see if it happens again and see what the cause is. I'm just hoping it's not the cats...

I saw this on the news last night:

A Euro MP for the UK Independence Party has sparked controversy hours into his first day in the Strasbourg parliament.

Godfrey Bloom was given a seat on the European Parliament's women's rights committee on Tuesday.

But he told the media: "No self-respecting small businessman with a brain in the right place would ever employ a lady of child-bearing age."

Mr Bloom, an investment fund manager from York, told journalists he wanted to deal with women's issues because: "I just don't think they clean behind the fridge enough".

"I am here to represent Yorkshire women who always have dinner on the table when you get home. I am going to promote men's rights," he added.

I have no words.

I'm just going to take a moment to pimp one of my favourite communities of the moment: [livejournal.com profile] shacking_up. It's a closed Sirius/Remus community where all manner of fabulous fics, fic recs and art are posted.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go to the [livejournal.com profile] shoebox_project and press refresh repeatedly in the vain hope that it will be updated.

*mumbles something regarding Yorkshire and me and me being a Yorkshirewoman and how dare he represent me*

I'm very jealous that you get to use your brain at work. I get to use a highlighter, and only that because I'm stretching the bounds of my job description.

I hope you're not allergic to anything too horrid. Or Catlike, which could perhaps be worse.

I too am now waiting for shoebox project. It's quite traumatic, considering I got to read the first nine parts one after the other, and now I have to WAIT and its just not fair...

[identity profile] odycee.livejournal.com 2004-07-21 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
Whether I'll be using my brain when I know what I'm actually doing is debatable, but it's nice to be learning something new. Plus I've already raided the stationary cupboard and have a nice stash in my drawer now.

Or Catlike, which could perhaps be worse.

I know... I'd just have to go around with some kind of space helmet on as there's no way we could get rid of the cats.

There's going to be a riot on LJ if shoebox isn't updated soon!

Why is it that stationery cupboards are the best part of any new job? And yes, that's probably just me. *pets ordered stationery on desk at home*

I demand Shoebox!

[identity profile] odycee.livejournal.com 2004-07-21 01:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Stationery cupboards are what makes life worth living. How can you possibly do a job without a full range of pens - in all colours, highlighters - in all colours, nice squishy rubbers, boxes of different sized paperclips, various notepads - of different sizes, different coloured post-its and a good pencil sharpener?

We all demand shoebox!

Oh God, I'm a lost cause. I swear I just wibbled over your list of stationery.

What is this? A fixation with stationery? I must write stationery!obsessedBilly and Dom. My life is sad.

(I have different shades of pink postits, in a stack. They're fantastic)

[identity profile] odycee.livejournal.com 2004-07-21 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll let you off as it was a rather wibblesome list - even if I do say so myself.

If you write stationery!obsessedBilly and Dom then you would have one reader at least. Stationery!pr0n!

(oooh, different shades of pink *wibbles*. Work only has yellow or blue - perhaps I should take in my lovely multi-coloured square ones even though I used all the neon yellow ones of the top)

Shoooooooooebox!! Woe, where is it?
Also, hope you have fun at work, and feel all better soon. Don't mind me, I'm hyper :D

[identity profile] odycee.livejournal.com 2004-07-21 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
WE WANT SHOEBOX. WHERE IS IT? RAH.

[identity profile] seshat1.livejournal.com 2004-07-21 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
It is not here yet!!!!! WHERE?
*looks under rocks for it*

[identity profile] odycee.livejournal.com 2004-07-21 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
*throws the rocks in a fit of rage*

RAH! MUST HAVE SHOEBOX CRACK.

[identity profile] seshat1.livejournal.com 2004-07-21 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
IT IS INDEED TEH CRACK
*has withdrawal symptoms*
Do you know shoebox withdrawal has reduced me to a state of constant capslock? Most amusing. The guy in my office thinks I am on drugs.

[identity profile] odycee.livejournal.com 2004-07-21 07:18 am (UTC)(link)
You know why he thinks you're on drugs? As you so eloquently put it: SHOEBOX IS TEH CRACK.

I'm quite upset that withdrawal is manifesting itself as CAPSLOCK ABUSE. I just can't help it.

[identity profile] seshat1.livejournal.com 2004-07-21 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
*hangs head* it is true.

CAPSLOCK ABUSE is a SHAMEFUL way to admit the withdrawal, but amusing because you can spot other poor souls aflicted with the same TORMENT.

WANT SHOEBOX! hem. Sorry about this! Might stop spamming and actually do some work soon!

"I just don't think they clean behind the fridge enough"

It's a piss-take, surely? Was he very drunk at the time?

[identity profile] odycee.livejournal.com 2004-07-21 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
I think afterwards he said his comments were 'for fun'. Crazy, crazy man. Perhaps he needs to learn the definition of fun...

[identity profile] moveslikegiallo.livejournal.com 2004-07-21 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
I have an intensely offensive sense of humour, so I did kinda find it funny. :\ It reminds me of the way my friends and I handed a debate in Psychology class when we were forced to argue for genetic modification for human babies. Basically we went insane and claimed we weren't having any stupid people, any homosexuals, etc, etc, to the point of almost reducing some of our fellow classmates to tears.

Hrm. I'm a little bit evil, I think.

[identity profile] odycee.livejournal.com 2004-07-21 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
Nothing wrong with being a bit evil...

I must admit to laughing at what he said when I heard it on the news last night - mostly out of disbelief. And then the news reader laughed - also a women of childbearing age. Unfortunately I kind of think that he wasn't having a joke when he made the child bearing age comment. Fucktard.

[identity profile] moveslikegiallo.livejournal.com 2004-07-21 09:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. But I can see his point. If men were given the same sort of paternity leave then it'd all be fair enough.. *shrugs* I don't know why I'm defending him. Just because I'm contrary, I think.

[identity profile] odycee.livejournal.com 2004-07-21 09:43 am (UTC)(link)
I can sort of see where he's coming from in that respect but he's still an obnoxious fuck!

[identity profile] elvinborn.livejournal.com 2004-07-21 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
I hope he wasn't serious. Though if he was joking, he should read that memo about how politicians can't joke about things like that. *mumbles obsenities*

Where is my shoeobox crack!!????? *weeps* Must look into the community you have pimped. I need R/S sustenance. *refreshes shoebox again*

[identity profile] odycee.livejournal.com 2004-07-21 07:22 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmm... I hope he wasn't serious too. But I think that he mostly was.

SHOEBOX! NEED FIX!

[identity profile] maryavatar.livejournal.com 2004-07-21 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
I read it here: http://politics.guardian.co.uk/otherparties/story/0,9061,1265746,00.html Then spent ten minutes frothing at the mouth. I am a housewife who lives in Yorkshire, and I'm horrified that this complete arsehole... breathes basically.

[identity profile] odycee.livejournal.com 2004-07-21 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
I saw it on the news as I went to bed last night and I was astounded that he would just stand there and say that. My exact reaction was to laugh in stunned disbelief. It's just breathtaking. Then again, he is a UKIP MP so I don't expect much else really.

[identity profile] niennah.livejournal.com 2004-07-21 12:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my lord. That guy is such an ass.

Also, nice icon!! ;) Thank you. :)

[identity profile] odycee.livejournal.com 2004-07-21 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I think ass is putting it mildly...

Heh. It is a rather nice icon.

*uses it again gratuitously*
