odycee: (Atlantis - Shep/McKay - Aliens made us!)
I ended up going to bed at half past one last night because I was finishing this McKay/Sheppard fic: Indelible. It's ridiculously long (c.130,000 words) although I wished it was longer, it's got proper plot - proper sci-fi plot with a brilliant space battle, a really interesting and likeable OC (I almost wish she was on the show!), and everyone is in character. Really, really good and definitely worth sticking with until the end.
odycee: (Atlantis - Sheppard - Colonel Grumpface)
The rest of England seems to be underwater but Hull is not (yet). Yay! I'm not sure why as it doesn't seem to have stopped raining for the last three years. I can't remember the last time I saw some sky.

[livejournal.com profile] emony just mentioned that she's sad that she's not going to Peg3 this weekend and so am I really. :( I've got no conventions lined up this year at all which is just not on. I know that the usual suspects have mentioned having a meet up at some point which I think we should definitely do.

SGA "Quarantine" Spoilers )

For the first time in ages, I stayed up late on a school night reading McKay/Sheppard fic: Forget Me Not by [livejournal.com profile] maisierita. It's in five parts, pretty long, and it sucks you right in. It's prison fic and amnesia fic, but manages to make the clichés work really well. I sometimes forget that I love long and plotty stuff.
odycee: (Atlantis - Rodney - b&w)
Fingers crossed, the internet seems to have fixed itself (I know that the moment I post this, my connection is going to disappear on me!).

I'm now going to post a link to that SGA fic that everyone and their mothers has recced already: Freedom's Just Another Word For Nothing Left To Lose by [livejournal.com profile] synecdochic. Seriously people, if you've even the slightest interest in Atlantis (and even if you don't - I've never seen so many people comment on a fic who've never seen the source) you won't regret taking a look at this. It's Rodney post-Atlantis mission and it's one of the best pieces of fan writing I've ever read.

And now for something completely different: here's a link to a crossover fic - Atlantis/Father Ted. So very wrong and yet so right. Major Ted by [livejournal.com profile] trinityofone.

“Doctor Weir, I can explain!” he said. “The ZPM--it was just resting in my pack until I could transfer it to the other temple! Really, I--”

Ahahahaha! That will never stop being funny.

I'm feeling much love for fandom and all the fabulously creative people in it at the moment.
odycee: (Atlantis - Shep/McKay - stare)
[livejournal.com profile] niannah and [livejournal.com profile] gambits_rogue collaborated again on an [livejournal.com profile] artword project which resulted in an amazing fic by [livejournal.com profile] niannah (and I'm not just saying that because I betaed it!) and video trailer for the fic by [livejournal.com profile] gambits_rogue. It's SGA and it's Ronon/Sheppard and McKay/Sheppard. The fic is gorgeous and I want to watch the vid repeatedly, and not only because the first shot of Sheppard is really, really hot...

(I wanted to title this post "fic and vid rec" but it made me look like I was terminally unable to complete a word.)

'tinternet seems to be a bit better this evening. Can't get through to ntl though so I'll have to try again tomorrow.

Did anyone else watch Life on Mars? I was quite sad that it was the last episode this week - it's been quite entertaining.

Some links:

* [livejournal.com profile] niannah's pictorial proof that Duet is Atlantis' Gayest Episode Ever. Yes, I know it's f-locked but I want the link here for my own nefarious purposes. ETA: Now un f-locked for your viewing pleasure!

* Neil Gaiman links to a Polish cinema trailer for Anansi Boys. Bizarrely, all the characters are white, and it's in Polish (of course) but it's still pretty cute. I like the idea of a trailer for a book!

* [livejournal.com profile] rageprufrock wrote a fic about Sheppard discovering Ancient TV on Atlantis. Read it and all its crack fic sequels here: One Life To Ascend To. Seriously, I inhaled water laughing when I was reading these.

* I keep meaning to mention that I have a del.icio.us account here where I bookmark all the fic that I've read and enjoyed. Pretty much all the new stuff is McKay/Sheppard (unsurprisingly) and I've added about two-thirds of my Sirius/Remus rec list so far.

Fic Rec

odycee: (Atlantis - Ronon)
I'm going to take a break from my busy schedule of lifting bits of burnt stuff and generally getting covered in muck (my hair has never been washed so much - having a dirty scalp is not my idea of fun) to rec a fic by [livejournal.com profile] niannah: Survival. It's a beautiful piece with Ronon learning about different kinds of survival. And I always like seeing my OTPs from an outsiders point of view - in this case, McKay/Sheppard. [livejournal.com profile] gambits_rogue also did some beautiful cover art for it.

Ack. The skin on my hands is so rough that it's catching on my dressing gown. Moisturiser!!

One day I'll catch up with reading my f-list. One day.
odycee: (HP - Padfoot - bad dog)
[livejournal.com profile] nassima has posted the second part of her Sirius comic - Letter To a Dead Man over on [livejournal.com profile] sirius_loving - Part I | Part II (NSFW panel in this one). It's gorgeous. The art is beautiful and it made me tear up. I love the picture of the escape from Azkaban.

Hurrah!

  • Yay! I'm off on a wee holiday for the rest of the week. I'm heading off down south with a couple of friends until Sunday and we're going via Salisbury so that we can see Stonehenge as none of us have ever been before. I'd better finish packing my toiletries and remember what else I've forgotten to get. So far I've remembered I have no toothpaste to take with me - but I do have camera film. D'oh.

  • [livejournal.com profile] niannah's just posted a lovely series of interconnected Sirius/Remus drabbles that hurt: To The End

  • To the new folk I gathered yesterday - hello and goodbye! I would have done a 'hello, this is me' post but I haven't got time now. Actually, that's a lie. I wouldn't have because I'm far too lazy.

  • Why can't the predictive text on my mobile spell 'Luddite'? Rubbish.

ETA: Little cat Bean has just discovered her pink jingly ball again. I'd forgotten that by the time it gets to bonfire night, she has decided that it's too cold and scary to go out in the evening so she tortures us all chasing that ball up and down the hard wood floor.

While I'm on a cat update - we haven't seen the field cats for a week or so. Apparently some crazy lady at the bottom of the hill is feeding them. Perhaps she doesn't realise that these cats have luxury as far as farm cats go - they have their own caravan and a fluffy basket for goodness sake! They're still around - people have seen them and the food is being eaten - but I saw a few rats last week so they're obviously not around enough.
odycee: (HP - S/R - adamasoda art)
I've just finished updating my Sirius/Remus recs post with about 30 new recs. And I've alphabetised it by author. Attempted to anyway. It was a very boring job.

And hello to any new friends I've acquired from [livejournal.com profile] mctabby's Friending Frenzy! :)
odycee: (HP - Deep thoughts with Remus)
I'm pretty monogamous when it comes to HP fic - mostly nothing but Sirius/Remus for me (as if you didn't know) and nothing Trio era at all. But I just read the most amazing Cedric Diggory fic and I love it so very, very much and it makes me so very, very sad for what happens to him. What is Right and What is Easy by [livejournal.com profile] hackthis. Wow.

I sat and read an entire book this weekend which I haven't done for a while (since HBP came out actually). Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner - a melodrama of manners, as it's described on the cover. It was written in the late 80's and it's a fantasy/romance. The two main characters, Richard and Alec, are thoroughly amoral, messed up and not very nice people but I couldn't help but love them and I just couldn't put it down. Good stuff. The only little niggle I had is that the POV sometimes annoyingly shifts mid scene, but I got over it.

[livejournal.com profile] niannah wrote a lovely and bittersweet Sirius/Remus snippet for [livejournal.com profile] scarvesnhats (which I'm not reading nearly enough of) - All This Time. Ooooh - and another one from [livejournal.com profile] scarvesnhats which I really liked this week was Seven Years of Blanket Abuse, Marauder-Style by [livejournal.com profile] shaggydogstail. Very cute!
odycee: (HP - Malfoy keeps coming secretly)
I've finally finished sorting my bedroom out now. My giant desk, giant shelves on my giant desk and my giant chair are all tidy and up and running. (and how can I forget my giant bed that I've had nearly a year now). I have candles too. And also the last of my bottle of vanilla vodka. And some long Sirius/Remus fic that the lovely [livejournal.com profile] niannah recced to me. And my fossil ammonite on the shelf in front of me. (Why does this Semagic spell check not recognise ammonite as being a correct word? Bah.)

I should post pictures of my giant furniture. And the stone painted like a cat that my friend got me for my birthday. I also should do a phone post one of these days so you can all marvel at my dreadful accent.

Yis folks, it's true, I've been at the vodka. Can you tell?

ETA: [livejournal.com profile] niannah has just posted a gorgeous Sirius/Remus ficlet - Three Consecutive Octobers. Marauder era getting together fic. My favourite.
odycee: (HP - Sirius - orange)
Everyone is doing this poetry meme: When you see this, post a poem you like on your LJ.

Because I am an uneducated heathen I don't really recall any poems apart from ones I did for GCSE. So for you, my very special f-list, and because I love you, I wrote a haiku:

Remus likes to watch
Sirius fly on his bike
It's very sexy

Are you astonished by my poetical genius? I thought so. I think there should be more Sirius and his giant flying motorbike fic. Remus would chastise him for doing something so dangerous but secretly he loves the way Sirius gets all covered in grease and sweaty in his leathers and flushed from the exhilaration of flying and doing something illegal. Plus, it's a legitimate way to get Sirius into leather! Do you think the penalty would be worse if he was caught flying an illicitly charmed muggle object whilst in his unregistered animagus form? Assuming Padfoot was able to balance on a flying bike of course. I bet he tried it.

*dons pimp hat* [livejournal.com profile] niannah has written a really lovely Sirius/Remus fic: Sorrow's End. It's set pre-Lie Low at Lupin's and post-PoA which I haven't read much of before. It's angsty yet hopeful too. <3

I'm going to see Serenity tomorrow! Yay! I've pretty much re-watched the whole lot of Firefly this weekend and I want to see the film now! I wonder if I'll notice whether anything has changed since I last saw it? Did I ever mention the Firefly fandom newsletter [livejournal.com profile] the_cortex? Well I have now! It's very useful.

ETA: And well done to Lost for those Emmys!

Stuff

odycee: (Firefly - Mine is an evil laugh!)
I've got tickets to see Serenity in Nottingham on the 20th of September!! Yay! How cool is that!

Another rec from me: I finally got around to reading [livejournal.com profile] prankstersguide. It's a (mostly) Marauder era collaboration with fics centered around a book the Marauders wrote called the Pranksters Guide. It's hilarious in some places and quite poignant in others. And one of the only places where I've seen Peter as Scabbers fic.

I finally got my mp3 player replaced yesterday and spent ages yesterday putting all the music back on. Hopefully this will last a bit longer than eight months... I'm a bit worried because as I said a few entries back, it seems like I'm not the only one that this has happened too. Bugger. I still love the little thing though and it keeps me entertained on the bus to work.

I think I may try and ride Oscar tomorrow. He's got some shoes back on, I've been giving him anti-inflammatory stuff and the ground is a bit softer now so hopefully he'll be ok. We'll see.

I've just looked back at my entries for the past month or so and none of them are much longer than a paragraph! I quite clearly suck at journalling. And I still don't have anything to say despite realising that. Ah well. I never seem to really say anything much about my personal life any more. Then again, I've never pretended that this journal was anything more than shallow fannish squee. I kept wanting to say something about the terrible devastation and tragedy that Hurricane Katrina left in its wake but I just didn't have the words. I can't understand how the rescue operations took so long and were such a mess but I'm very glad to see that the people are finally getting help.

I need to take my Creative Zen back to the shop - the headphone port has pretty much died on me. :( It looks like it's a common problem too. I'm in a quandry now - should I replace it with a new one and run the risk of the same thing happening again? Or should I get a refund and get something else? I love my Zen though - it glows such a pretty blue and I'm very attached to it.

Look at this massive master list of Harry Potter fic rec lists by [livejournal.com profile] s8219! Wow! Thanks [livejournal.com profile] rian219 for linking to that from your new website! And while I'm in a pimping type mood, have a look at [livejournal.com profile] seshats_library where [livejournal.com profile] seshat1 posts recs nearly every day - mostly for the HP fandom but sometimes other stuff too.

Crack!fic

I know I only just linked to a Sirius/Remus crack fic the other day but I just read Harry Potter and the Missing Text by [livejournal.com profile] minnow_53 and laughed my head off.

A senior editor at Bloomsbury has recently admitted that she often pressed the Delete key by accident when scrolling down text to be revised in the Harry Potter books. We can now bring you certain passages that were cut as a result, and show them in context at last ...

1. Prisoner of Azkaban, p. 252.

‘Next moment, he had walked to Black’s side, seized his hand, pulled him to his feet so that Crookshanks fell on the floor, and embraced Black like a brother.’

Sirius returned the hug with enthusiasm, deepening and extending the contact between the two men until their mouths met in an ardent, hungry kiss that seemed, to the watching children, to last forever ...

Mwah! I seem to have done an awful lot of fic reading in the last week. It's great.
odycee: (HP - Moony)
* You'll all be glad to know that I've swopped my interrogation lamp for a smaller, less bright one that's tastefully blue. Much nicer on the eyes and I don't have to get my sunglasses out now. Phew.

* Why has my layout gone screwy? My (admittedly completely shit) header has disappeared across half the page. 0_o How very strange. ETA: Ah ha! Damn you [livejournal.com profile] metaquotes and your shitty post of doom. You've ruined my f-list.

* I really love this Moony icon even if I did make it myself.

* For anyone who's read too much cliche Sirius/Remus Marauder era fic - here's a hilarious Sirius/Remus parody fic (from May - I've never claimed to be moving with the times...) by [livejournal.com profile] cmere1 which wins the internets for containing such gems as:

They kiss again and it is amazing and wonderful and feels oh so good that Remus can’t remember why they haven’t done it before. Sirius thinks that Remus is a great kisser and wonders the exact same thing, at the same time wondering why the point of view switched so randomly.

and

“I love you too, Remus, and I will never leave you!” Sirius cries, hugging him tight. And they lived happily ever after (until Sirius got carted off to Azkaban).
odycee: (HP - Padfoot - bad dog)
Urgh. Back at work. I still feel rather shitty and keep coughing a lung up every so often but I do feel better. In protest of being back at work and having to spend an hour (!) going through email I just did a wee bit of fic reading. I just read [livejournal.com profile] musesfool's last offering for [livejournal.com profile] dogdaysofsummer - Seasons - Sirius/Remus of course and it's just lovely.

Fic Pimp

I had a great holiday last week and now I'm paying for it by getting the plague. Or a horrible cold and chesty cough anyway. I'm hoping it's not going to turn into a chest infection now. I'd better make sure I go to work tomorrow. I think they all think I'm skiving what with it being directly after my birthday.

Now for a fic pimp. I read this last night and I want to know where it's been hiding all this time! It's Marauder era Sirius/Remus by [livejournal.com profile] franticbabbles. My favourite kind of slow getting together stuff and also very hot in places. There are two arcs to it:

The first: Third Year|Fourth Year|Fifth Year|Sixth Year|Seventh Year

The second: Patience|Stillness|King For A Day|Not This Day|This One|Homecoming

I'm up for reccing science fiction novels this month over on [livejournal.com profile] cracked_spines and I've started with Use of Weapons by Iain M Banks. I think I've just about decided what else I'm going to pimp but I keep changing my mind!

And just in case you missed it: the massive Sirius/Remus fic rec list that I posted yesterday.

ETA: And bloody hell, it's August already. How the hell did that happen?!
